The research is expanding at a great rate, new light is constantly shed on the role of the human ‘microbiome’, while the brief post-natal window of opportunity to establish optimal gut health is confirmed by Yale and Harvard studies. Take advantage of that window and you can bestow a lifetime of better health on your child, so I’ve been a keen student of the probiotic story for a few years.
100 times more cells and 100 times more genes than are present in your body. A massive amount of information carrying material in a mere 1.5Kg - you can think of the gut microbiota as your ‘other genome’. Probiotics were once a product you took after you’d had a course of antibiotics and maybe something you took along on your overseas trip to ward off ‘Delhi belly.’ Now if somebody asks me where to start with their preconception preparation, a high potency probiotic for both prospective parents is where I begin. In fact, whatever your age or life stage, I’d put a probiotic at the very top of your ‘must-have’ supplements.
And it’s such an easy thing to do. It’s way easier than cutting out alcohol or caffeine, way easier than making time for a regular exercise program and while dosing with probiotic doesn’t let you off the hook of regular physical activity and embrace of a healthier lifestyle, its benefits are equally far-reaching, and it has the potential to make all your other health-promotion measures more effective.
